A Showcase of Precision, Craft, and California Agriculture at Its Finest
Behind closed doors, in a room lined with cobalt blue tasting glasses and carefully labeled samples, olive oil is evaluated with a level of precision most consumers never see.
At the 2026 Central Coast Olive Oil Competition, hosted by the California Mid-State Fair, trained judges approached each entry with disciplined focus—warming glasses in their hands, inhaling aromas, and tasting methodically to assess fruitiness, bitterness, and pungency, the core pillars of world-class olive oil.
“If you can’t taste bitterness, you can’t be a judge,” said Chief Judge Deborah Rogers—highlighting just one level of expertise required to evaluate oils at this competition.
Entries were judged under strict international standards, with panels progressing intentionally from delicate to robust oils. Palates were reset between tastings with green apples and bread, ensuring clarity with every evaluation. The process is both sensory and scientific—where even a peppery finish, sometimes described as a “two-cough” oil, is a mark of quality.
The signature blue glasses are intentionally used to eliminate visual bias—ensuring color does not influence perception, even subconsciously, and keeping the focus entirely on aroma and flavor.
After extensive blind tastings featuring producers from across California, the competition’s highest honors were awarded to:
Best of Show Delicate – Cobram Estate (Woodland, CA)
Best of Show Medium – Rio Bravo Ranch (Bakersfield, CA)
Best of Show Robust – Heart Rock Ranch Olive Oil (San Miguel, CA)
Best of Show Flavored – Sunshine Olive Oil (Templeton, CA)
Standing out in an exceptionally competitive field, Sunshine Olive Oil was named 2026 Olive Oil Producer of the Year. The award is given to the producer with the highest scoring oils across the competition and requires a minimum of three entries—recognizing both excellence and consistency. The Templeton-based, family-run producer earned back-to-back titles in a close race among top competitors.
The honor will be commemorated with a custom championship belt buckle and a billboard on Highway 101 near the Cuesta Grade. Award-winning oils will also be on display during the Fair.
In addition to taste, producers were recognized for visual presentation in the Central Coast Packaging and Design Competition, where branding meets artistry:
Best Label & Best Packaging – Sunshine Olive Oil (Templeton, CA)
Olives thrive in California’s Mediterranean climate. This year’s competition reflected that diversity, with entries spanning from Northern California regions like Kelseyville and Chico to Southern California’s Oak View near Ojai, with strong representation from the Central Coast, including Paso Robles, Templeton, and San Miguel. Together, these regions showcase how environment and expertise shape oils that reflect both place and process—bridging agriculture with culinary artistry. High-quality olive oil elevates everyday cooking, enhancing flavor, freshness, and overall dining experiences for consumers, home cooks, and chefs alike.
The competition offers a glimpse into a lesser-seen side of agriculture—one defined by expertise, generational knowledge, and a deep understanding of flavor. As one judge remarked during tasting, “I wasn’t expecting that—the flavor is incredible,” capturing the sense of discovery that continues to define the industry.
From orchard to bottle, the Central Coast Olive Oil Competition celebrates the people, precision, and passion driving California agriculture forward.
